The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a fairly rare breed in America, although abundant in England. Their history is very close to the American Pit Bull Terrier, and both breeds came from the same bull and terrier dog which was used as a ratter, bull baiting dog, bear baiting dog and fighter. Although most of England enjoyed the blood sports (especially royalty), the owners of such dogs were primarily coal miners and other industrial workers.

England outlawed the blood sports at the end of the 1800's and the bull and terrier gained popularity as a housepet. Anyone owning a bull and terrier definitely knows what great pets they make! And when watching a Stafford interact with a child, it's easy to see how they earned their nickname "the Nanny dog".

Around 1935 a small group of fanciers who had worked to get the Staffordshire Bull Terrier accepted by the Kennel Club finally reached their goal. Many names were suggested, but since the breed had virtually evolved in the black country, the mining area south of Staffordshire, the group agreed that the name Staffordshire Bull Terrier was a proper and deserving name.
